USING MOVIES/ VIDEOS in CLASS
1. SILENT VIEWING
- Keep the sound off and let the Ss watch the movie silently for a few minutes.
- Ask the Ss to describe what they watched
- Make them dub/give a name a short part of the movie after watching once.
- Keep this activity shorter as your students may get bored
2. FREEZE FRAME
- Freeze the frame after a phrase, word, idiom or any topic you’ve recently learned or the points you want to draw your Ss attention on.
- Freeze and ask questions about the location of a person or an object to practice prepositions or places (in front of the station, on the table)
- Freeze the frame for practicing new vocabulary (vocabulary about kitchen, street, car).
- Ask questions such as ‘of these 10 words which ones can you see?’
3. ROLE-PLAY
- Make Ss act the hottest or the most dramatic part of the movie (individually, in pairs or in groups).
- Make some alterations, for instance change the gender, role, location.
4. BEHAVIOR STUDY-CULTURE COMPARISON
- Give your Ss chance to compare their culture, life-style with others’
- Ask them to find out 3-5 inter-cultural similarities and contrasts.
5. PREDICTION
- Ask your students to predict the next sequence of the movie (What’s going to happen next?)
6. THINKING AND FEELING
- Draw your Ss’ attentions on the emotions of the actors.(‘How can you describe the feelings of the child?’)
- It’s appropriate for practicing emotion words (angry, irritated, hopeful, worried, happy, scared)
7. SOUND ONLY
- Darken the screen and make your students just listen the sound of the movie
- Ask Ss about the speaker’s appearance and character (describe the person from the voice)
- Make them guess what’s going on in the movie.
8. WATCHERS-LISTENERS
- Pair your Ss and make just one group watch the movie and make the watchers tell the movie to listeners.
- It’s appropriate for practicing some grammar points such as tenses (now he’s running out to the street, he’s falling down, the police are arresting him)
9. TELLING THE STORY
- Leave a gap in the movie and make Ss guess what happened in that part.
- Write down 3-5 sentences about the movie randomly and make Ss put these sentences in an order.
10. UPDATING THE STORY
- Ask Ss relate the story with daily incidents by asking up-to date
